Learn Serbian & Može kafa podcast: Episode 14 - New Year's Resolutions

Today we're talking about New Year's plans

or how to talk about New Year's plans in three different levels, beginner, intermediate

and advanced. I'm Nikola and here is Maki.

Maki, здраво свима!

Како си, Маки?

Добро сам, хвала, а ти?

i'm making plans for the new year so maybe we can you can help

we can do it together

yeah that's a that's a huge topic right now right people are always like

talking about

new year resolutions uh and i heard uh i mean i read somewhere that

only 10 percent of

you know the population like all people all the people um actually do their

make their resolutions come true so that seems that seems kind of true that's

why it's better to have like

a more generic or you know more like broad let's say plans for

the new year maybe yeah so we have

three levels levels level one is a beginner one so do you want to

read it together yes let's do it

The topic is vacation plans.

You wanna be A?

Yeah, I can be.

Gde ćeš ići na Old Moor?

2025.

Exactly. Ići će na more u Crnu Goru.

To je super.

Hoćeš li ostati dugo?

Da, ostat ćemo dve nedelje.

Nice. That sounds nice like a beginner.

So it's a very nice dialogue

for the year let's just have a

quick review 25 godine

right from the

5 on it's going to be

6 godine 7 godine

yeah right before

how is it going to be before

if it was 2023

if it was 2024 23.

Yeah, always the last number will be ordinal number, so first, second, third, but

in genitive, feminine gender.

So, pet-te. Godine is optional, you can leave out godine.

Djećeš iće on, but 2025.

That's still fine.

But it's ordinal number, feminine, genitive, singular.

So, if it was 2021, it would be 21, right?

Yeah, 2021, yeah.

Okay, it's not that confusing now.

Good.

Good. And one thing.

Hočeš li ostati dugo?

This is one way of asking, right?

Will you stay long?

Hočeš li ostati dugo?

Or I can also say, ostačeš dugo?

Ostačeš li dugo?

Ostačeš li, the most formal one is daličeš ostati dugo.

It doesn't have to be formal.

Like, it's the most common with dali.

so you can either do that or putli after the verb or yeli right

yeah yeah yeah

yeah or yel cesh ostati dugo yel cesh ostati dugo yeah okay okay okay

sir nagora offers montenegro everyone uh just to underline that next one

is intermediate level Yes, topic is New Year's resolutions.

I can start.

start? Yeah, you can start this time.

Kakve su tvoje planovi za 2025.

godinu?

Zaj changed everything here, sorry, but we will come back to this.

Počet ću da učim novi jezik i više ću trenirati.

Sjajno, koji jezik ćeš učiti?

Učit ću španski, a ti?

Planeram da se predružim času kuvanja i da se više bavim jogom.

That was my answer, actually, but now you have to do it.

Okay.

So what we said is your plans were 2025.

Again, do we say it in a different way?

Yes, we do, because of za.

Because of preposition za, which demands zakuzati.

So it's still feminine

Ordinal number

But now acquisitive P2 2025 godinu Without

godini also

We can say right

Za 2025 Would be enough

Okay Alright

And počeću da učim

Počeću I will start

Short version

Future tense

i više ču trenirati as the second part started

više, now ču is separate

right? yeah so after adverbs više

is an adverb

after adverbs we use in critics

which is like short forms ču, češće, sam sije

you use them immediately after adverbs yeah makes sense, I mean, if it's in

the beginning, you put the two at the end.

If it's not in the beginning, you just separate them.

Like in the next one, koyu yezik, çeş uçiti.

So, çeş is again separated because koyu yezik is in the beginning.

You cannot start a sentence with çeş. Yeah.

Mm-hmm. Okay.

and the last

and

sentence was

in present tense

planiram

because I'm planning

right

planiram

da pridrušim i više bavim

jogom

it's all bavim

all present

bavim

could be also

radim

uradim da više

vežbam

than

jogu or

radim

jogu

sure but baviti se it means to engage

to do something

it means instrumental that's why it's yoga se više bavim yogom does

it sound formal to you?

bavim se yogom no it doesn't have to be formal part is

pridružim maybe

what would you say?

dobijem

maybe I plan to go to the cooking time.

Ah, I see.

Yeah, I go to the cooking time.

Cooking class, by the way.

Yeah, cooking class.

Okay, good. Now let's go to the advanced level.

Yes, career and personal goals.

I can be.

Okay, you can be.

Yeah.

How do you plan to build your life in 2020?

Peti godini? Petoj godini.

Petoj godini, znaju slučaj.

Završavam master studije u junu, a posle toga ću tražiti posao u IT sektoru.

Odlično. Gde planiraš što radiš?

Ako bude prilike, zaposliju ću se u Beogradu, a ako ne, selit ću se

u inostranstvo.

Šta još planiraš za 2025?

Išli bi pet tu.

Pet tu, jas.

Planiram da idem na nekoliko konferencija i da razvijem svoj startup.

To su ozbiljni planovi.

Želim te puno sreće.

Hvala.

As the numbers are confusing, we wanted to have a cocktail of every, I

guess, by Deji here, but still useful.

So this time, how do you plan to improve your life?

that's a very deep question unapredeš svoj život

dvijeljede dvadeset peta

here is in locativ

because of preposition u

and

it's in this year

so months and years like that

can be locativ yeah za petoj godini godina vikim godini mhm

ok and

here the answer is like

završavam, i'm finishing

my master's degree master studije u junu a posle toga

and after that ču tražeti posao

u IT sektoru so we will ču tražeti is will look for

yeah i will search for search for

again post the dog construction that's why we use true after it yeah nice

and i like this format

right if i have additional sentences with aqua if

yes you can use we'll talk about it after but there's a couple ways

to do that

yeah but akobu the prilike is like a phrase

that goes like all the words

go together like this

yeah it can be a phrase

if there is opportunity

akone

if not selicuse inostransvo inostransvo is a very difficult

word for me inostransvo abroad

yeah I don't know it doesn't like remind me of any new any other

word that i know that's completely new you know

strana is an old slavic word for country and that's what the root of

it you know means other

other countries it's all old roots it doesn't have that meaning now i just

know strankinia strana so Yeah, yeah.

Foreigner.

Okay. And we have here a nice wish at the end.

To su ozbilni planavi.

Very serious plans.

Želim ti puno sreće.

Wishing you very good luck.

Yeah, a lot of luck, literally.

Yeah, that's true.

So I want to do a little bit of practice with you.

I want you to tell me some verbs, very common verbs in present tense

I will try to tell them in the future tense.

So I give you verbs?

Yes, please. Okay, let's start with idem.

Idem, ya. Ichi chu, yes.

Yes, but the only thing is if you use ichi chu, don't start with

ya. So just ichi chu.

the other options are so there's always three ways to

make future yeah

without yeah and even which is not standard but

very frequent colloquially yeah that's true

I hear it a lot

okay without pronouns I will try

go on should I pick like random verb

you can do

you can choose from the list

Spavam. Ja spavam in future.

Spavat ću. Dobro.

Maybe on jede.

Jeće. Yeah, with š.

Ješće. Ješće, yes.

What happened there, you have jesti plus će.

Ti falls out.

You have jest će and so we'll change to š.

Ješće. then yesh-chu

if it was

yesh-chu, yesh-che-š okay

читam

читat-chu okay and maybe

oni like they

oni

piu

hmm

for they it would be

what was it Wait a second.

PT Pt is infinity, right?

So it's going to be the same for he, she, then, right?

Ptče? Yeah. Ptče?

Ptče. Because pt, you do a t, a če, and that's the word.

So if it was on, also ptče, right?

Yeah.

So it's important to know if the infinitive ends on ČI, write auxiliary verb

separately.

So ČI ČU, two words.

If it ends on T, write it together.

Kupi ČU.

How will we say...

Okay, now it's my turn.

On ide. IDI.

On ide in future?

ČI ČE. ah okay not it this time of course it has to be

separate okay because infinitive is it

that's true we don't change the infinitive but pt is just a

very short word that's why

yes yes and est because you have so that changes to sure okay okay

then i will say

Zaposlim.

Zaposlim se. Yeah, it's right.

Zaposliću se. Okay.

Tražeju. No, traže.

They.

Tražiće. Okay, good.

Okay. And what was this nice word?

Wait a second.

Unapred.

Okay.

to

how do we translate

to improve

improve unapredite

unapredite infinite unapredite

sounds like

to me

I don't know not location but

an adverb for location unapred yes because napred means forward

yeah yeah i wouldn't guess it's gonna when i put it as a word

uh means uh in advance okay so i heard it somewhere else that's

why yeah so it means like forward as a verb here then

right improve yeah moving forward yeah yeah okay okay

one more uh

this is an irregular verb.

Završava.

Ki, ši? Mm-hmm.

So, završavaće is the imperfective.

But you have also završi, which is perfective,

and then završiće.

That's true. Imperfective and perfective aspects, sadly.

Yeah, different topic.

But both of them can be done the same way by putting Če at

the end.

Yeah.

Okay. Želim.

Želeću. Okay. Easy.

And.

Seliš se.

Setiš. Remember? No.

Seliš. Seličeš se.

Seličeš se. Okay.

Good. Nice. And I want to do a little bit of practice with ako

dobijem priliku.

Okay, conditional clauses.

Ako can be formed with present, future, second.

Yeah.

Yeah, present, future, second, I think.

Yeah. So if we say, we can make the rest of the sentence in

future tense or also in present tense, right?

Can we? Yeah, you can do both.

I think in English you have to agree the tenses, right?

You have to be the same tense.

Yeah, but there's a mixed option as well.

It depends on the context.

So the example here is,

I will visit France.

But if I say

No.

Because

is perfective aspect.

And

it has to go with another verb.

I want to visit.

Radiću novi kurs I will do a new course

Radiću neki kurs

I will do a new course

Kao profesoru ili kao učenik?

Kao učenik

Super

Još nešto?

Let me see what can I say with if

Ako bude

Ako bude lepo vreme

U proleće

Putovaću negde

U prirodu Let me ask you Inostranstvo ili u

Srbiji?

Može i jedno i drugo ali nisam išao na taru

skoro so možda ću ići ako bude lepo vreme možda idem na taru super,

super moraš moraš ti to

ok, good

I know you published a book

so I think there's also a plan about that one Šta planiraš, šta radiš

za tvoju knjigu?

Aha, oš sa tvojom knjigom.

Let's do a future second.

Ako budem imao vremena, ako budem imao energije,

ja ću napraviti novu verziju knjige.

Stampan, ali printed.

Štampanu

verziju knjige. Super.

Želim ti

puno sreće. Hvala.

I'm copying from the text.

Ok. I... Let's see what I will say.

Ok. Šta ćeš ti

raditi sljedećeg godine?

Ok. Sljedećeg godine

Ako dobijem priliku...

Počeću da dajem časove joge.

Ah, ok.

Does it sound correct?

Yeah, počeću da dajem, počeću da...

Yeah. Radim, dajem.

Radim, časoroge dajem, predajem.

Časove yoga was correct.

I think that.

I ako budem imao vremena,

nastavit ću da ućem srpski, naravno.

Ako treba. That's always a good thing to do.

it's because

so hard already

Dobro pričaš sada Zahmanjući tebe i drugi profesori

i teško je, it's hard

it's hard to do it

constantly

but you know

it's hard but you still

right now for example, Akob

You know, that was so confusing one year ago for me.

Now, when I hear it, I automatically know what it means and I can

use it. That's the little thing that makes me, okay, I'm on the right

track. Yeah. The most important part is like doing it consistently.

Reading, listening, writing.

Grammar will come along.

You have to understand grammar, how to use it.

But this is more important, practical use.

Yeah. But you must accept this is the weirdest grammar part.

There's a can, there's a past tense.

So confusing, but still.

Ima sinisla, let me say.

Okay, so I want our listeners to write their plans for 2025 in Serbian

in the comment section.

and I hope you will use these new words and structures that you hear

in this episode.

Yes, I hope it helped you as a simulation how the dialogue

will be in three levels.

Thank you for listening or watching.

And we'll see you in the next episode.

See you in the next one, Maki.

And Happy New Year!

Oh yeah, the new year.

And we'll see, well, let me say it, we'll see in 2020.

That year.

There you go, great.

What a way to start a new year.

Okay, we'll see you.

Ciao. Ciao. Uživajte.
