Jutro će promeniti sve - Popular Serbian TV series

I'm Maki. Hi, I'm Nicola.

Welcome, Nicola. How are you?

I love you.

Good. A little tired, but good.

Nicola has been very busy these days, so finally we are together this morning.

so good news i finally finished my first serbian tv series in my life

and to be honest i was kind of addicted to it i watched it

very fast because it's very good

it's very practical it's 25 minutes an episode you troce promenite swear is the

name

I knew this series before

But the episodes were not on YouTube

With English subtitles

And I never followed them on TV

So now they are all on YouTube

And the English subtitles really help Of course Yes

I wrote so many notes wrong

But then I asked Nicola to correct them with me

Obviously whatever I hear

Is not the way I hear When you come to write them but uh

yeah they speak fast yes sometimes they say meh but i understand me you

know so those kind of

little things happen so what i want to do today we talk about um

this tv series a little bit

what it is about and then we are going to be looking at some

notes that i have taken while watching it like very frequent phrases that they

use. I think they are very useful sinners.

Yeah. Okay. And then I have a little surprise for you, Nicola.

I hope you will pass my test.

Or I'm really curious actually to see the result of this quiz,

but we will come to that later.

Okay. So the first thing, you also watched it, right, Nicola?

But years ago.

Yeah, a long time ago when it came out.

So at least four or five years ago, I think.

Ooh. Okay. some things you wouldn't remember much then no okay let's try to

describe this in serbian this like plot characters a little bit and then we

will be looking at the screen to see the

characters in detail so filip angela luba sasha right

These are the names of these four friends.

Yeah. Main characters.

Main Sasha is the shortcut of something else, right?

Or is it not?

Usually in Serbian, no.

That's it. That's the full name.

It can be from Alexander, but not really.

We like Alexander is the nickname Aca usually.

Yeah, Aca. Yeah, that's true.

In Serbian at least.

Okay. So, oni su četiri prijatelja, od koji su dva bratisestra.

Does it make sense?

Yep. Yeah. Or you can say, od koji su dvoje bratisestra.

Because dvoje is a number of noun you can use for like group of

people are different gender, mixed gender.

Troje, Troje. So I wanted to say four friends of two of whom are

brother and sister.

They are in their 30s.

30s.

And they try to know who they are.

They are trying to find out who they are, who they are really.

Yeah.

And what I really like is this TV series is showing the Belgrade spirit,

right? Yes, that's the best thing about it, yeah.

Yeah, because they are in a big city.

They are connected to their families, but some of them are very far,

So they are kind of independent and they are trying to find different options

for their lives.

So I wrote, Seria pokusava da dočara i duh Belgrada danas.

Govori o onima koji žive u njemu, onima koji iz njega odlaze, ali i

onima koji mu se ponovo vračeju.

so I can translate

the show tries to

bring out

the spirit of Belgrade today

it is talking or shows about those

who live in it about the ones who leave

Belgrade

and the ones who return to it

again and I think that's true

it really shows

the real Belgrade

um that not like just like ideal belgrade that you can see i don't

know in tourist documentaries

whatever but like life in belgrade in those blocks maybe you know belgrade or

life of students

overall how students live or um the ones who just finished

university the young people in belgrade and that's what's really good and their struggles

shall i stay here shall i leave or if i left shall

i go back that's always uh in the mind of serbian youth i guess

youth exactly everybody is thinking

about leaving serbia which is not good and that's like a daily like a

common thing

a lot of people leave serbia yeah so we will go into the details

of these characters and you will who is leaving, who is coming back and

who is staying.

And I added one more sentence to describe.

So the

story is...

It's about friendship, family, love, work, success and failure.

Exactly.

So look at the character now, the characters.

We have four friends.

Philip. I think the first episode started with Philip.

So I wrote about him.

Can you read about him a little bit?

Yes. Philip, that's the one on the left, right?

In this image, Philip studies at Berkeley and works at SAD for a few

years. Then he decides to return home.

And Angela is his sister.

Angela has studied psychology and will soon be moved to her daughter.

Then she changed her thinking.

This is the character that changes her mind all the time.

She was doing her PhD in psychology, and then she was about to move

in with her boyfriend.

The morning that they moved in, she changes her mind.

And then things start to change so, so fast for her.

Yes. And her best friend, Sasha.

Sasha, yes. Oh, yeah.

Sasha can also be a male and female name.

There's a lot of names.

Like, Vanja is another one.

Yes, that's true.

So, Sasha, Angelina, najbolja prijeterice i Cimerka.

Ima bar, ali je bankrotirala.

Yeah. She is one of the strongest ones, I think, in the group.

Yes, in the group.

Cimerka, I didn't know this word.

Flatmate. Cimer, Cimerka.

Cimerka, yes.

And she's got a bar thanks to her mom, who is a bit rich,

But she goes bankrupt.

I guess.

But then things start again in a good way.

And ljuba.

Ljuba is the last one.

Ljuba loves beer, women and sport.

Then she starts to be

himself to become a father.

to yourself? Philip I guess.

To be honest I also thought Philip is like you, the way

your hair is curly like her.

Yeah, but also like he is calm, he's not that you

know...

crazy crazy as Ljuba is yeah so maybe I connected with him the most

but all of

them are very unique yes yes I prepared some questions for you to ask

let's see hmm what was

me

your favorite character yes

Good, but Luba has been smiling at me.

He has laughed at me.

So everyone was very good, but Luba made me laugh more.

So I felt like I liked him a bit more.

He is a funny character, yeah.

Okay. What did you think of the series?

But surprised you.

Yeah. That Angela wanted to return to your former child.

So that Angela wanted to go back with her ex-boyfriend after all the other

experiences as a lesbian, like as a gay person.

You know, and then, I don't know, I didn't understand.

I was not expecting that at all.

That's before the spoiler of everyone, but that's what happened.

Yeah. What a strange rule you learned.

Yeah. This one surprised me as well, but I learned that what lesson or

what rule, what weird rule I learned is that if you make a

mistake in traffic as a driver,

you might have really tough penalties, options.

So, if you hit a car in a piano station, the prison is either

80,000 dinars, around 680

euros,

or 160 hours of social useful work.

I wrote Cuckoo for that.

so the yeah you can say in english yeah it is like if

philip was a bit drunk and then he wanted to

like drive even though her his sister said you shouldn't anyway he just made

a little mistake

he just hit the car softly that was parked behind him and the penalty

was either to pay 8,000 dinars

around like 700 euros

680 euros

or 160

hours of

community service

did you know I didn't know that I mean makes sense because he was drunk so

I guess the fines are high for that.

But did you have any friend who had to do community service because of...

No. No? We've got good friends.

And this is the guy from Berkeley.

He's the smart one.

He's the careful one.

But he gets this community service.

It felt like a little bit unfair.

yeah that's what's interesting about him he came like from usa like um where

he had a good job and

everything but he didn't feel like he fitted in there and then we see

him like like a ideal

well-educated person with a good job uh change drastically yes

when he came back

he got drunk he made mistakes he in that in that search for finding

himself that's what happens

exactly and the community service was collecting the garbage on the street

and starting from 6 a.m

it was a very hard community service for him

this will make me stay more alert and careful when

I drive in Belgrade for sure.

So let's go to my surprise to you.

I will be asking you, I found this quiz online on noise.taçkarısı, the RS.

So you said you feel closer to Filip, but let's see if you can

prove it in the quiz.

So, you have

an important test in the morning, but your group of friends call you for

a party.

What would you do?

One, if I teach you, then you'll be the next test.

Or, we'll come, but at night.

or iskuljeraču, provod, faks je prioritet.

I svakako ne mogu da izađem, imam drugih oboveza.

I ispiti sutra?

Ujutru. Yes, ujutru.

Zavisi od ispita.

Maybe I will go to the night.

I picked the same answer.

So you will go with your friends but you will stay until midnight.

Or just until the night.

You have to stop the first question.

To relax before you go.

Okay, the other question.

How do you spend your free time?

How do you spend your free time more, like more frequently?

I think these

days is the last one for you.

Yeah, I live with a girl, so that's normal.

So I guess let's choose Koja Slavonure, which free time for now.

Line reading, I also guess that.

But normally, if you were a student, it would be BLEIM SEDE VOJKOM, maybe.

Yeah, yeah.

BLEIM means hang out, right?

To hang out, it's a, yeah, how do you say it?

It's a part of colloquial Serbian.

Yeah, yeah.

Or slang.

Slang, definitely.

Okay. Ortaq, we will talk about this word later, but naiboli ortaqsi bite opisa

la kwao.

So your best friend, ortaq, ortaqsi, or this is plural, right?

Ortaqsi is plural, yes.

So your best friends will describe you like options.

Total Ludaio.

Second option. Ortaika nekoje ubek možes ta se oslošš.

Partij životinju i dobru došu.

Either two or the last one.

So either... Parties of life or other?

No, no, no.

Not parties of life.

Okay. Not that one.

I'm not a party anymore.

Someone who you can rely on was the second one, I think.

Or someone who can always be able to get up.

Or a good soul.

Good soul.

I also

I also picked Dobrodoš, to be honest.

Yeah, let's choose that one.

Dobrodoš. Okay. I guess.

We got a couple of different answers.

I'm curious what you will be.

Next question. Tvoj stav prema životu najbolje opisuje sledeće citat.

Citat. Right. Citat.

So, your stance towards life.

can be described the best with which one, right?

So these are citations, I guess, sayings from different people.

Alexander Diva. Život ye oluja, oluja, moi mladi prietelju.

Dostoyevski. Život ye tanir, gova na koji treba iskusiti.

Samuel Beckett. Život su moje greške.

Oscar Wilde, we are all in the blood of life, only because some of

us are in the stars.

Uff, difficult.

Maybe the last one.

We are all in the world, only in some places.

Yeah, I think I picked...

What was život je ten jir gov na koje trebo izkušiti?

Life is a plate of shit that you need to experience.

That's just to ask, right?

Yes.

I think I chose also yours then.

Something pessimistic, but not that pessimistic.

Yeah. Okay. Ko je kriv što smot, kde smot?

Okay, so that means who is, what was it, krivi?

Guilty for us being at this state, I

guess. Yeah, our mothers, politicians, we are krivi to...

It was time to burn.

Nobody is a crime.

That's life.

I guess politicians.

Politicians are to blame for the

current state.

And where do you sleep at night, Nikola?

Where do you sleep at night?

So this

is like, Filip.

I guess

I have my own family.

Yeah, I also picked that one, obviously.

Okay, so who you are, you think?

Philip? Philip, yeah.

No, you are Angela.

You're honest. Angela?

Yes. Okay, that makes sense.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I can see that.

Okay. I think Angela was my favorite character from the show.

Yeah, I think you are both, like, you enjoy studying.

You are more focused on your work.

So there are so many common things that I see also between Angela and

you. All right.

Now let's look at my notes that I wrote while watching the series.

I always had my notebook with me.

and some words that I think everybody should know.

So the first one is, OZBIILISE.

OZBIILISE. OZBIILISE. So get serious.

Yes, get serious.

I think mostly parents use this, or sometimes when friends always use it, like

get serious. Yeah, anyone can use it.

But yeah, mostly you hear it from parents.

Yeah. Glupophora.

It's glupo normally stupid, but also lame.

I think it has the meaning.

Lame, dumb joke.

Yes.

Yeah.

And what I realized, people who make that lame joke, do that lame joke,

say this to themselves.

Yeah, I guess, yeah.

Sarcastically, yeah.

Ortak.

Oni mi ortak.

I think they were always using ortak, which is a Turkish word.

Oni ortak, yeah.

So... Ah, okay, I didn't know that.

Yeah. But we use ortak for only for partners,

like when you do business together or partner in crime.

it or took is just friends just you know yeah to say that he's

not boyfriend i think sasha used it

and told me or that like she was saying he's just a friend right

yes exactly

and i know this is easy for you but i think it's important

to ask this question kako ti ode?

like how how do you feel here?

yes, how are you here?

so I think the ones, our listeners

also who live in Serbia or who visit

Serbia

local people will ask this question kako ti ode?

how do you find it here?

yeah, how do you find it if you visit?

but I think we

as Serbian learners should use this question to ask locals as well.

Kako ti je od, o Belgrade?

Kako ti je od?

That's a good question.

U Serbi?

Kako mi u Serbi?

Aha, u Serbi, definitely.

One of the most common compliments, starci.

Starci, yeah. Starci.

So, even though it's a female, male person, doesn't matter.

Starci could be used, right?

Yeah. So you could say tsaritsa, but yeah.

Yeah, it's more common, I guess.

They keep using this when they help each other a lot, when they save

each other, tsaritsa.

Yeah, it means you're an emperor.

Yeah. But it means like you rock, let's say in English.

Yeah, you rock.

You're the king.

You're great. Yeah.

Yeah. Also similar, another compliment, velikisi čovjek.

Mm-hmm. again for women men it was used yeah человек means like a

man in general human or man in

general like yeah you know doesn't matter the gender yeah so you're a great

man yeah big man

or woman or woman yeah but like i i was listening to it a

couple of times they are useful

And I thought Trovek is always men, you know, so I learned that it's

okay to use women.

Yes, yes.

So Trovek is people in general, like people as singular.

And it would be weird to say, well, like, as a woman.

I mean, that specifically means like a woman.

Yeah, sounds like sexist.

Yes.

So this is like Trovek.

It's weird. Trovek is in general.

Yeah. And I think this is also nice.

That happens to me a lot.

Yeah.

So when somebody makes a mistake or, you know, little problems,

you can just comfort them by saying,

That happens to me too, kind of meaning it was used for.

And I like this.

Staznam. Ah, yes.

Staznam. that's that's interesting um it's like what do i know that means like

i don't know essentially exactly that's very good for us for learners because sometimes

people complain tell some deep

things and you don't know what to say and you just say now so

that's like i don't know you agree but

you don't have much to add to this so that's now yes exactly or

where you just don't know something Yeah.

And another one that I liked.

Što se mi ne tiče?

Što Što me se ne tiče?

That means which does not...

Like interest me?

It's not my business.

Yes.

Not my business, yes.

Or just ne tičem se.

It's like the most neutral.

Aha.

Ne tičem se.

Okay. Cool. and spasla si me

you saved me Spasla si me.

Yes, that's a nice one.
