Ep.10: Sve najbolje

Welcome to Možekova podcast.

I am Maki.

This season of our podcast is a bit different from the previous ones.

I have another friend, also called Ivana, joining me to have short dialogues in

Serbian. Then we will explain them in English.

This new season will be like mini Serbian lessons.

So if you are ready, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the podcast.

Здраво с Вима!

Я сам Маки.

Здраво! Я сам Ивана.

Добре дошла, Ивана!

to our final episode in the season, season seven.

Oh, yes. Yes, it was a lovely, you know, journey with you to do

these 10 sessions.

Oh, thank you.

I have the same feelings and shared it.

I knew that.

So we picked the topic, how to say goodbye in Serbian for our last

episodes because we are literally saying goodbye.

We will probably stop doing podcast, but we will keep learning Serbian and we

will share posts on our Instagram, but probably podcast series will stop for awhile.

But Ivana's voice will stay here with you.

Listen and listen again our previous episode.

OK, so. The easiest goodbyes are both high and bye words

in serbian what are they even high and bite zdravo yes zdravo

you can greet people with zdravo and say goodbye with zdravo yeah also ciao

right ciao yes it's very common yeah we use that yeah very very often

uh with the young people probably mainly yes we said ciao also uh in

both greetings and when you're walking away and also for while greeting sometimes we

use it like we double it like cha-cha we say right i hear yeah

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it can be it can be like the doubler

yeah yeah these are the easy ones and i think one of the most

common goodbye like when you are leaving the store or going out

of a cafe after meeting your friend.

Prijatno. Yes, it's very common.

Prijatno means enjoy it, enjoy yourself or something like that.

It's very common.

Meaning, mainly Prijatno, as you mentioned now, I think that mainly we use that

when you go to the not to the store, but mainly to the restaurant,

cafe, that kind of things, you know.

OK, you can use in the store in the supermarket or something yeah depends

now what is your feeling what is your on your mind is it prietna

or buy or something you know what i was thinking when i first learned

this prietna it's also like enjoy your meal right yes so whenever i buy

something from you know supermarket or some store or bakery they say prietna and

i always think do they mean i enjoy eating these or they mean i

have a good day because i'm buying something to eat

both i guess right both of course yeah

and more formal ones still i hear it in khrushchevats i mean

yeah that's really formal yeah more or less it is my crucial people are

formal then That you can respect somebody, if it's old people in

your company or something like that, I think.

Which means, literally, it's two words in one.

Do vidjenja, meaning until we see you again.

Ah, yeah, that's true.

That will be a literary translation, you know.

So, Vigenia is also a word that we can use.

It's separate. You can use separately Vigenia, but it's Vigenia, it's very rare

to use without .Vigenia, but it's like old word, you know, I think it's

old word. So it's very, very common to say .Vigenia, like one word, you know.

That means that you will see somebody again.

That's really nice.

Formal. Formal, yes.

I will just refer when we come to the, I think it was the

last hour, Zbogom, because it's different, you know, meaning.

Dobigenia is, okay, formal and cool.

The more common one is, again from the same verb, vidimo se.

Right. Yes, vidimo se.

See you again or see you, just see you.

Yeah. Yeah, vidimo se.

I like this one.

Vidimo se, it's so easy to say.

Yes, please. When I was first emailing some Serbian friends, they always ended

with Trioamose. Ah, really?

Yeah. Okay, keep in touch.

I thought they used it in the emails more, or messages, in texting, I

mean. Yes, yes.

Right, cheers. Yeah, we are, yeah.

Okay, you can use it on the street also, of course.

Trioamose, Vidimoze, that's very similar meaning at the end.

Vidimoze, Trioamose. And they're also used together, right?

Yes. You can use three words.

And we use pozdrav, right?

We use that pozdrav, regards.

Yeah, pozdrav. But it's not too formal, right?

Friends also can say to each other.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

And pozdrav for you, like I'm saying pozdrav to you, but I want to

say, oh, say hi to your family or your partner.

And then how would I say?

Pozdravi tvoje. Pozdravi everybody who is in your home

or that you are very close to somebody, that you live with somebody or

something like that.

Your people. Your people, yeah.

But the written form, like when we want to say goodbye in a written

way, so then we say velike pozdrav, I use that a lot.

Yes, yes, yes, you can use it.

Veliki pozdrav. And you say.

The best regards, that means veliki pozdrav again.

And the srdachan pozdrav, as you mentioned before, is also best regards, meaning it's

the same. That you are thankful for what you wrote or what somebody done

or something, or it can be just a formal way to finish your mail

or that sir that probably it comes from heart probably i think so

yeah you know i think that from the heart actually it's high from the

from the heart that uh like a warm like something with uh with the

full of emotions or something like that Hmm.

Otsırtse also, right?

Da. Yes. Yes.

For this one, we cannot add Otsırtse to pozrava.

No, no. No, right?

Maybe we will now, these were the, you know, daily short, short time buys,

I mean, not forever.

We have a list of a little bit deeper goodbyes, like a little bit

more emotional, I think.

Yes. Right? Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. I hear this bogom in the songs, especially Croatian songs though.

I think that bogom is used more.

Yes, it is.

But in Serbia, bogom is something really religious maybe or something really serious?

Actually, it's a very old word.

It's very common even now with the religious people who go to the church

or never mind if they met on the street, meet each other on the

street, they will say it's Borgon.

And when you hear that on the street, somebody will think, oh, somebody used

very old word, it's very nice.

But you think in yourself, probably they're religious, you know, because they use that

word. Because in the common people, young people especially, we are not here that's

Borghum at all.

It's a very nice word.

And I think it comes with, that means with God, go with God, god

with god love or something like that yeah that's very nice yeah we started

with the religious ones there is one more neck at the book chuva right

uh-huh yes literally that means literally that means uh let god save you not

not save you is to keep you something like that protect you yes Neka

is let normally.

Yes, let let.

Yeah, Neka te bok chuva.

Mm-hmm. Nice. Nice also.

But more common one, the popular one is Sven Aybojye.

Yes. All the best.

All the best.

But of course this is not for saying goodbye forever.

You can use Sven Aybojye on a daily basis.

Yes, yes, yes.

Sven Aybojye. especially on Christmas days or, you know, I hear that.

Yes, on celebrations, any kind of celebrations, yes, you use that Sve najbolje.

Yeah. Meaning that you have to have a nice time with somebody or something,

some kind of ceremony.

But if your friend is moving abroad, for example, would you also say Sve

najbolje? Yes, you will.

Yes.

Okay. And this would be more written for maybe?

And I wish you the best.

It will be, yes.

You will not stay on the street, but you will say in the mail

or in the letter.

I wish you all the best.

And especially that's connected with, I think that phrase is connected with any kind

of celebration. For birthday, for when baby comes, on some kind of holidays.

like that i think yeah if it's plural like you're fishing uh sorry jelly

bump that means uh plural yes uh if you want to say in uh

for somebody it's It's, I want you all the best.

I want you all the best.

I This is what I used a lot.

You won't be able to.

Me. But before that you have something also nice.

Yes. Nedostaječeš mi.

Yes. Nedostaječeš mi.

I will miss you.

Nedostaječeš mi. Again.

I will miss you.

In plural. In plural.

Yes. I mean, miss is such an easy word in English, but in In

Serbian it's challenging.

Ne do stay a Cezmi.

Yes, because it's Cezmi.

Yes, and too many syllables.

Ne do stay a Cezmi.

And it's starting with ne, so it feels like a little bit negative word

to me.

But it's not in Serbian.

It's not actually, but then, yes, but you are again, you are, you are

alert to something that you will feel sorry for something.

Yes, maybe because of that, you have that feeling that it's a connotation that's

negative, but actually it's not negative.

Negative, but saying something that you will...

Lack of you, like I will suffer from...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

These are the sad ones, but these are needed.

Everyone who leaves Serbia, I think, will say this.

And Puno Sreche is another one.

That's if somebody's going, right?

It's leaving. Good luck.

You wish, yes, you wish a lot of luck for something.

Puno sreće. Puno sreće, yeah.

I wish you a lot of luck.

Or if you're going to, if you have the final exam or if you

have something that you wish to finish with luck or whatever.

I think that on this list we missed one word.

Yeah, I added actually online but probably I forgot to remember.

Yes, that means take care of yourself.

Yes, take care.

We use that mainly, it's in English, it's very common to use that, take

care. Serbian, it's not so in the common

oral meaning or to say goodbye or to say that to Vajse.

Or you can say that if you go for some special trip, special event,

that it could be something which is tricky, it's not so common to do

something for instance now when you when you told me that you would go

to the paragliding uh can say to you, because it's something very common, you

know. Exactly. Yeah, riskier.

So, yeah, we can use that.

Okay. And one question.

I always wonder.

Let's say a couple is breaking up.

Okay. And they want to break up in a nice way.

So, they will say, okay, goodbye forever.

Which word would be the one?

Goodbye forever.

Like a farewell.

We don't have that word, one word for the farewell, for instance.

What would G use if you were British?

Sorry? What would G use?

or what did you use before to say goodbye like in a serious way

like uh i think that it could be a longer longer sentence or something

like not one word yes not one word uh something like like,

doviđenja, ne doviđenja, zdravo.

Aha, zdravo. Dravo, nadam se da ćeš imati sreću u svom životu.

Hope that you will have luck in your life.

Aha. And something like that, I think.

uh

we will not mention i don't want to see you never again or something

like that it's not common that you will say such a thing you know

maybe you will see even the word i'm just looking at your list even

we can say it's bogom that means bogom very formal very very strong

you know comparing with the dovi genia or bye or something like that yeah

yeah that means okay it was nice but bye bye i don't want to

see you again exactly like that you will say zbogom yeah the song that

i mentioned like one of my favorite songs i love will awesome said from

a tour in croatia it's welcome lubavi like she's saying goodbye to her boyfriend

like love yeah yeah yeah so in serbian you can also use that yes

you can use that

yes okay yeah that's true so i wanted to use these phrases uh to

say goodbye to our followers for podcasts at least so it was it was
